5 Ideas for a Winter Road Trip in Iceland! 🇮🇸
This itinerary is for couples who like unique locations and adventures together.
1. Start your journey in Reykjavik, the charming capital. Explore the cozy cafes and shops for your first taste of Icelandic culture. Take a photo on the Skólavörðustígur rainbow street, and don't forget to grab matching Icelandic sweaters!
2. The very south of Iceland offers dramatic photo opportunities. We recommend checking out the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck, Skogafoss waterfall, and Reynisfjara Beach. They are short driving distances apart, and offer some of the most famous sights in all of Iceland.
3. Icelandic horse riding. Icelandic horses are beginner friendly and have big personalities. They have thick winter coats and are perfect for a horseback ride in winter. Riding horses through snow together is both fun and dreamy!
4. Glacier hiking. If you enjoy active breaks, glacier hiking is a must. Iceland has the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. Going inside an ice cave is an otherworldly experience, don’t forget to take a photo!
5. For a romantic and relaxing end to your trip, visit a hot spring together. Spas have better amenities and extra experiences like saunas and wellness treatments, but driving up to a natural hot spring is an experience you’ll remember for decades to come. Less than an hour away is Särestöniemi museum. It’s the former home and family farm of the artist Reidar Särestöniemi. His colorful paintings portray the unique nature of Lapland, and his home is equally interesting!
